Prof. Tulio Peramo Cabrera started his professional training as a lyric singer before turning to composition. Today he is one of Cuba‘s leading composers, with many works that have become integral to the chamber music and orchestral repertoire, and regular premieres at the Havana Festival for Contemporary Music and the Havana International Guitar Festival. He won prizes from the Cuban League of Artists and Writers in 1987, the Agustín Barrios Competition for original pieces for guitar (Paraguay, 1994) and the Rodrigo Riera Competition (Caracas, 1997).
Maestro Peramo Cabrera has a particular interest in writing for classical guitar. Many pieces had been composed for solo guitar and chamber combinations with guitar as well as two concerts for guitar and orchestra, which had their world premiere in Munich, New York City, Mexico City, Barcelona, Kansas City and Salzburg. Many of his pieces had been premiered and recorded by re-known guitarists like Eliot Fisk, Antigoni Goni, Richard Hand or Johannes Tonio Kreusch.
The artistic partnership with the German guitarist Johannes Tonio Kreusch produced a great deal of this production for guitar. Mr. Kreusch premiered many pieces composed for him by Mr. Peramo Cabrera at such important music centres as the Gasteig Hall, Munich and the Carnegie Hall in New York. This fruitful cooperation includes a CD entirely dedicated to the guitar music of Mr. Peramo Cabrera called „Portraits of Cuba“ At the present time, Maestro Peramo Cabrera, in addition to his creative work, teaches Composition, Orchestration and Harmony at the Conservatory in Havana.
